YOUR GUIDES:

Greenhorn

An Explorer-in-Training

Every great voyage begins with a first step aboard. As a Greenhorn, you’re learning the ropes—exploring tools, testing ideas, and discovering how energy and motion work together to move your creations. Earning this rank shows that you can work as part of a crew, follow specific directions, and submit a final design that functions as intended. You may not yet have your sea legs, but your curiosity, cooperation, and craftsmanship mark the true beginning of your journey.

MAKING THE PROPELLER-POWERED CAR:

To become a Greenhorn, you must successfully complete the Propeller-Powered Vehicle Challenge, demonstrating teamwork, careful construction, and problem-solving. After your vehicle has been tested, you’ll disassemble it, take precise measurements of the baseplate, and redesign it in TinkerCad for 3D printing. You’ll earn your Greenhorn medallion once your digital design has printed successfully—proof that you can turn your first creation into a seaworthy structure ready for future voyages.

YOUR GUIDE:

Deckhand

Becoming a Designer

Now that you’ve earned your place aboard, it’s time to take greater responsibility for your craft. As a Deckhand, you’re no longer just testing the waters—you’re building with purpose, precision, and imagination. This stage of your voyage is about mastering how power flows through your creation and learning how to shape that energy through thoughtful design.

Earning this rank shows that you can work independently while still supporting your crew, follow complex instructions, and demonstrate careful wiring and installation. Your craftsmanship reflects the creativity and discipline of a true maker of the seas.

Making an on/off switch

To become a Deckhand, you must successfully wire a working switch into your propeller-powered car using your 3D-printed base. The circuit must be correctly connected so that the motor runs only when the switch is turned on. Your components should be neatly installed, securely attached, and ready for testing. You’ll earn your Deckhand medallion once your vehicle responds to your command—proof that you can not only build but design with intention.

YOUR GUIDE:

Apprentice

Becoming a Problem solver

On 18th-century voyages, apprentices were the learners of the crew — sailors who had mastered the basics and were now trusted to repair and refine the ship’s essential systems. They worked alongside carpenters, sailmakers, and stewards, learning to think critically and act independently while keeping the vessel running smoothly.

In Endeavorosity, Apprentices take on a similar challenge. They’re no longer just following directions — they’re building with purpose. The Apprentice combines design, wiring, and creativity into a single working project, demonstrating not only craftsmanship but also the critical thinking and problem-solving it takes to make every part fit together.

Making the final refined baseplate

To achieve the rank of Apprentice, you will redesign your car’s baseplate so it integrates a secure space for the switch, battery pack, and motor. Your wiring must be neat and professional — each wire cut to the proper length and covered with heat shrink wrap for safety and durability. Your finished car must travel at least five feet without stopping, proving that your design works in practice. Finally, your 3D model must include at least one new design element not demonstrated by your teacher — something that shows imagination and originality. Every detail matters at this stage, and precision, creativity, and persistence will set your work apart.
